The Best Keto Cereal

April 2024 · 4 minute read

Keto cereal is all over the place. At its best, this low-carb breakfast is a fatty and protein-rich bowl of crunchy morsels with a flavor that comes close to recreating the familiar breakfast cereal classics. At its worst, well, keto cereal tastes like something you feed livestock. There was a lot of livestock feed in this tasting, and not enough delicious human food.

For this taste test, we looked for keto cereal that came close to tasting like regular cereal. If it’s a copycat of a classic, like many on this list, we want it to taste like the original. Cereal, including keto cereal, should be a tasty and sweet morning treat. It should not get soggy instantly, and it should have a pronounced flavor. There wasn’t much to like here, but there were a few standouts, and one brand in particular did surprise the hell out of us.

Best of The Best

Catalina Crunch Cinnamon Toast Keto Friendly Cereal$30.40 (4 pack) Amazon

First of all, I absolutely adore the brand name “Catalina Crunch,” which sounds like a nickname for an old-timey professional boxer. It’s catchy as hell. And this cereal tastes great! Managing editor Gwynedd Stuart chimed in with “they nailed this” and I totally agree. It’s crunchy like a good cereal should be, so it can withstand the addition of milk and won’t promptly get soggy. There’s less sugar than in regular Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but the toasted, cinnamony notes are just wonderful. This is more rich than your average cereal, but it actually works. Staff writer Jordan Myrick couldn’t stop glowing about it either. I took this one home with me.

Best Vanilla

Kashi Go Cinnamon Vanilla Keto Friendly Cereal

This cereal is really savory and delicious with a hint of vanilla. It contains a lot of pea protein and chickpea flour, which gives it a meaty and almost buttery quality. To me, this is a notch below Catalina Crunch. It’s good and pleasant, but doesn’t quite fall in to that category of cereals that feel like dessert.

Best Chocolate

Three Wishes Cocoa Grain Free Cereal$34.39 (6 pack) Amazon

This has a great chocolate flavor, and like all the keto cereals, it’s pretty savory. It’s made with monk fruit, chickpea, organic cane sugar, and tapioca. Oddly, there’s a bit of saltiness to it, but we don’t mind. This also has a crunch that rivals the Catalina Crunch Cinnamon Toast cereal, which we thought was dynamite. Three Wishes doesn’t get soggy fast, and we love that about it. Go ahead and drown it in milk, baby.

Best Frosted Flakes

Incredi-Bowl Keto Friendly Frosted Flakes$22.99 (4 pack) Amazon

Incredi-Bowl is a decent name for a product, if not a little cutesy for my taste. It’s no Catalina Crunch, I’ll tell you that! This is really sugary, and it has that crunchy, flaky, corn-forward taste you associate with Frosted Flakes. The aftertaste is a little weird, however, and although it is crunchy, it gets kind of soggy quick. Still, it does recreate that Frosted Flakes flavor quite well.

Best Blueberry

Simple Truth Blueberry Flavored Keto Cereal$7.69 Ralphs

This is another one I brought home with me. All keto cereal has this fatty, almost oily taste to it that feels protein-rich and filling. The hint of blueberry in this one is quite nice. It’s not insanely fruity, but then again, neither are blueberries? I got into a heated argument recently with friends about blueberries; they’re my favorite berry, which everybody else thinks is insane. They just have a subtle, mild flavor that I really enjoy. And so does this cereal. I’ve been eating this right out of the box as a protein-dense snack. No milk needed.
